Who are osteopathic physicians?

They are doctors of osteopathic medicine, licensed physicians who have a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree.  They are called osteopathic physicians because they put special emphasis on the role of the bones, muscles and joints in the healthy functioning of the human body.

What is osteopathic medicine?

It is a complete, professional health care that gives an added dimension to general medical practice.  It is a science using proven medical knowledge and all accepted methods of preventing, diagnosing and treating illness and injury.  It is a philosophy that affirms the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate itself.

Why should I know about osteopathic physicians?

When it comes to health care, you have a choice!  While DOs and other licensed physicians (MDs) are both fully qualified to treat illnesses and injuries, DOs are uniquely qualified to practice osteopathic medicine.

What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?

OMT is used as a system of analysis, diagnosis, and treatment. As a system of analysis, osteopathic physicians are trained through the development of their tactile senses to distinguish those parts of the body in which they detect a disorder. As a system of diagnosis, osteopathic physicians will proceed to determine the cause of the disorder in the body function (somatic dysfunction). As a system of treatment, osteopathic physicians will determine the appropriate treatment -- sometimes that will mean only limited manipulation, other times extensive therapy over a period of several weeks, and sometimes OMT will be used in concert with other modalities of diagnosis and treatment. (quoted from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine)

How do I find a DO in my area?

There are two ways to find an osteopathic physician in California.  You can visit your insurance carrier's website to search their provider database or you can use the "Find a DO" tool on this website.  Once you click on Find a DO in the blue navigation bar above, you can search for an osteopathic physician based on a city, county, or zip code - or by medical specialty.
